Merry Christmas

We had a wonderful Christmas this year. We started the holiday weekend by watching football yesterday afternoon. Then we to my parents for family dinner and opening gifts. The gift opening was a bit of sensory overload, but was manageable. There were a few timeouts for some clean-up midway though.
Elena really enjoyed opening presents. The wrapping paper and bows were fascinating for her.
Elena opening her new coloring set.
She even opened gifts that didn't belong to her.
My dad hiding in the corner.
Grandpa and all of the kids.
We had a easy going day today. Went to brunch at my Aunt Max's house and then watched more football and enjoyed some leftovers for dinner tonight. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.

Cookie Monster

Last night we made sugar cookies and decorated them. Sprout helped Barry with the sprinkles on the cookies. She seemed to think that this was a fine way to spend the evening. She later decided that eating cookies is more fun than decorating them. Since then, there have been plenty of requests for "cookies, please". And "more, more please".

Santa at the Orchard House

This evening we met up with the Macks to visit Santa at the Orchard House, a local restaurant. The OH put together a great light display around the restaurant. This time Elena was happier to see Santa, but still refused to speak to him or take any candy from him.Our visit was short and sweet, as Elena fell down one too many times and decided that it was time to go home. It was pretty much all downhill after the inflatable donkey in the Jesus display bucked her off.

Elena's First Hair Cut

Now that Elena is pushing the age of two, we decided that it was time for her to get her first hair cut. Yesterday I took her to Jessica's after work. Jessica suggested that I bring and envelope to store her hair for our baby book. Below is a picture of about 80% of the hair Jessica cut off. Something tells me that Locks of Love won't be asking for donations any time soon...

All I want for Christmas

Barry originally told me that he didn't want anything for Christmas, citing his awesome hunting and fishing year as gift enough. A couple of days later he dropped a few hints about a GPS collar, rifle scope, and maybe a new gun.

The events of this weekend made it clear what he'll be getting under the tree. The fridge in the house quit working. We have 3 refrigerators and of course it's the one we really need and use that gave it up. When I first discovered that the fridge wasn't working, Barry wouldn't believe me. For some reason the melting ice cream and warm milk wasn't enough proof. Finally I made him call Luis, who told him to feel the compressor. Was it cold? Yup. Time to go shopping. Our new Fridgidaire is going to be delivered on Tuesday.

Hip Dysplasia Update

Elena went to the doctor last week for her first check-up after her cast was removed. Her doctor examined her hips and did an x-ray.
He thinks that her hips are in place, but they are still dysplastic. Meaning that the socket isn't growing around the ball of the hip. For now, she'll continue to wear her brace 16 hours a day and we'll go back in 3 months and repeat the x-ray.
We're cautiously optimistic that things will start to improve without further intervention.

In Search of a Christmas Tree

Today we ventured into the mountains for our fourth annual Christmas tree hunt. This is a tradition that started when the Dare and Hebdon families invited us along four years ago. There are a few traditions one must adhere to when looking for a Christmas tree. First, it requires a white-knuckle drive on snowy roads. Today we nearly got stuck crossing a frozen creek and had a few tense moments driving up a canyon. The other traditions include playing in the snow, taking a self-portrait, eating greasy food, and (starting last year) soaking in a hot spring. Here I am pulling Elena around in her new sled. Karen had little confidence that we would find any snow, and joked about how we were going to get a picture of Elena in her new sled even if we had to drag her across cheatgrass to do it. Elena is also sporting her new snowsuit, compliments of the Dares. We were thankful to have the snowsuit because it was very brisk today.Finding the perfect tree for Goldilocks is not an easy task. I found the perfect tree, but it was too tall (like 20 ft). The next one was too skinny... However, we did manage to find this fine specimen. Once we get it decorated we'll post more pics.We enjoyed some scenery along the way...
...and took our self-portrait. This year we cheated and used a tripod.Afterward we visited a hot spring and followed it up with some greasy food. I had fish and chips while Karen had finger steaks. While at the restaurant, Santa visited us at our table. This particular Santa was kind of loud and Sprout wasn't impressed. She pulled off her best stink-eye glare yet. Karen and I were laughing so hard we nearly cried. I hope Elena likes coal, because I think that is what she will be finding in her stocking this year.

Sprout's OCD and Other News

I think it's time we come to grips with the fact that Elena has OCD. Exhibit 1, her set of blocks. You'll notice that all of the blocks on the top row are positioned with the colored letter facing up.
If you carelessly put a block in facing the wrong direction, you're likely to get a look like this:
Once her blocks are all arranged properly, she moves upstairs to spit-shine the floor. Literally.
You see, I am in charge of brushing her teeth, so I made the mistake of teaching her how to spit. She is really proud of her newly acquired skill...but she doesn't save all of her spitting talent for tooth-brushing time. She noticed that spitting on the floor was upsetting to us and that we immediately wiped up her prize. So now she simply carries a rag around with her and beats us to the punch. I will never, ever teach our next kid how to spit. Next kid? That's right, Sprout is going to have a sibling, due June 6. Sib is currently 3.5 cm long. We decided to share the news at Thanksgiving this year.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, we had a nice dinner at home; Karen and I hosted both sides of our family. I had the camera sitting less than two feet from me during dinner and totally forgot to take a single picture. This picture of Elena's artwork from playschool is the only proof we have that Thanksgiving actually occurred. I hope that all of you had a great Thanksgiving and we wish you happy holidays ahead.

Good November Hunting

First, I would like to warn you that graphic hunting pictures follow......

This year I have been very excited about the controlled hunt deer tag I drew. The first step to successful big game hunting is scouting. This is made a whole lot easier when someone sends you pictures of a nice animal along with a description of where he lives. Can it really be that easy?
Step 2: Make sure you have the right equipment to get the job done. Sometimes, the pursuit of a trophy requires calling in some favors... So I borrowed my father-in-law's boat. For those of you hoping to join me steelhead fishing later this year, um, we may need to find another boat...
This hunt cost me a good boat washing and two bottles of whiskey to the boat mechanic. Anyway, I was successful in bagging the biggest deer of my life this year. I think he will score around 180.
The last picture was taken in my friend's garage in Baker City, OR, because we planned to go steelhead fishing the next day. We had a decent day and caught 3 fish.

Fast forward two weeks. Guinness has been sick from eating deer bones, and lost a bunch of weight. I didn't think he would be able to hunt this weekend, but I showed him my hunting vest on Sat. night and he suddenly started eating again. On Sunday he had what was probably his best hunting performance ever. On three occasions we inched in on birds that I was able to see standing on rocks at 10-20 yards before they flushed.
After the hunt Sprout and I watched her Packers win again, and then I followed the 49ers game on the internet because FOX decided to play SOCCER instead of the the second-best team in the nation. Seriously, who watches soccer?

We're still here

We haven't been up for posting much lately. One, because nothing exciting has been going on. Two, because we've all been sick for the last two weeks with what Barry has dubbed the "daycare super bug". I think we're finally on the mend.
Sprout inherited this table and chairs from her older cousins. They decided they were getting too big for the table and it needed to go. She's been fascinated with it since it first came home. She is also fascinated with her wooden blocks. She doesn't really enjoy building anything, but simply likes to stack the blocks in the box. She also enjoys similar activities with her crayons- who needs to color anyway?

Bean Family Hunting trip

Last weekend, the entire Bean family went camping/deer hunting. Actually, Karen, Dad and I went hunting and Mom and Kory watched Elena. Elena finally decided that uncle Kory isn't the devil. She even offered to share her "slightly" chewed chicken with him.My parents just purchased a 26' Nash travel trailer, so we decided to test it out. It was really nice to have a warm place to stretch out our legs. I haven't actually taken any pictures of it yet, but you can see part of it in the picture above.

Now I must admit that I tend to leave out a few details about the pain and suffering involved with hunting trips in order to entice Karen into join me. If I were to tell her that we will be riding a horse in the freezing darkness for over an hour, then sitting on a cold, windy ridge for a while before hiking until our legs get numb, she might not go. Instead, I tell her about how many deer I generally see each day. She has been along enough times to know better, but she still pretends to believe my lies.

On Friday evening, Karen and I set out to spot a deer. We rode the horses for about an hour before we tied them up and started hiking. We made it about 50 yards from the horses when she said, "I don't see any deer." We ended up hiking around all evening and about 4 hours the next morning before we spotted a buck. Karen and Dad both ended up getting bucks, but it was a very, very long day. The expression on Rat's face pretty much sums it up.I think this is the first time our entire family has been camping since I was in high school. I'm hopeful that will change in the future.

Halloween

This evening we took Miss Ladybug out on the town for Haloween. We got a late start because Karen and I both worked today. Elena was pretty tired because she spent her first day at a new day care, but she was a trooper for the most part. Here she is being shy with her great grandpa. After making a few stops, we had pizza with the Macks. There we learned that Elena hates halos (the devil-child is Zarek). Overall it was a pretty low-key holiday. Next year we look forward to visiting a pumpkin patch and making some jack-o-lanterns.

Making Music

Earlier this week Sprout was trying to play the piano. Normally she stands on the floor and reaches up to play. Next thing I knew, she pushed her little stool up to the piano bench and was sitting on the bench playing. She is still working on the basics, but appeared to be having fun.

QUIT STARING AT ME!!!

Yesterday Grandpa Les stopped by while Sprout was eating breakfast. Apparently she wasn't ready for company that early in the morning. She ate her entire breakfast with her arm over her eyes.

It's been almost two weeks since she had her cast removed, and, as the doctor indicated, life is returning to normal. Sprout started walking short distances on Friday. Here she is "reading" the newspaper.

Since she missed out on the summer swimming season, we plan to head over to Given's Hot Springs later today.

Goodbye Cast

Yesterday was a big day for us- Sprout got her cast off. It's been a long 12 weeks, but it was nice to see it go. Here is a picture of the cast getting cut off.
Here is the cast in the garbage.
Sprout had an x-ray done yesterday and her hips are in place. She'll be getting a brace later this week. She is suppose to wear it almost continually for the next 2 weeks, then she'll wear it 16 hours a day.
Her legs are still a little stiff- which is to be expected. I tried to put pants on her today but she doesn't like her legs adducted while she gets dressed, so dresses it will be for the next few days.

Hunting Preparation

With the month of October starting, I officially begin my stint as a hunting widow. Barry has at least 4 big game hunts planned that I know of, and I'm sure there are a few more "last minute" ones. This doesn't include chukar, goose, duck hunting, or fishing.

Barry and Matt left yesterday for opening day of Matt's elk hunt. The hunters haven't made it home yet, but word is that Matt was successful and they'll be home tomorrow for dinner with dinner. In preparation for the hunting trips, Barry froze breakfast burritos to be reheated at camp. This is a picture of the burrito assembly line.
While he worked in the kitchen, Sprout was hanging out with her Girf. She has taken to "standing" in her cast. She's using the table for support below, but she also tackles the hands free attempt. This usually ends in a turtle position.
On a side note, Sprout will be cast free on Monday! I think we'll celebrate by letting her play in the dirt, followed by her first real bath in 3 months.
